The lake area covers about 15 000 ha, of which 1 800 ha is taken up by Knysna Lagoon, one of South Africa's largest estuaries. The lagoon is rich in invertebrate organisms and fish (including the rare Knysna seahorse), which in turn support a variety of waterbirds. The Knysna Marine Reserve, which falls within the lake area, has been established as a closed breeding area for invertebrates (bait organisms) to be used for restocking areas open to exploitation. Fishing is thus allowed but no bait may be collected in this area. Few mammals remain the area, but bushbuck, Cape grysbok and common duiker are occasionally sighted, and bushpig, leopard, baboon and vervet monkey also occur. Location: Extreme south-east of the province; Knysna. Access: The park surrounds Knysna, including the lagoon; several public roads, including the N2, traverse the area. Accommodation: None. There is a variety of accommodation in Knysna. Other facilities: Most watersport activities are permitted in zoned areas of the lagoon. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 24 hours. |
